Daybreak

By Terra Wolfe

Daybreak, with you curled

and warm against my skin

brought bright angels,

to stroke my eyes to light.

That first dawn light

drew your profile.

Outlined pink and gold and blue

along every curve

of your face, your arm, your back.

Even the light loved you.

I saw the face from my childhoods dreams,

from my mother’s prince-stories.

Sunlight crawled across the bed to touch you

and so did I.

My chest fluttered,

joined the birds

in morning hymns.
