February Construction

 By Terra Wolfe

Abomination, bulldozers.

Scars,
           scores winter brown grasses.

Ruts of thaw water

trickle mud,
                    beyond ankles,
                                      beyond grief

Dragons,
           in patterns
                        of cooperation,
                                    destroy, destroy.

Orchards of firewood.

Earth still clings to bare roots

                               like tears of tree ghosts.

No pheasant sound.  No rabbits.

Monsters carpet mud with mortgages.

Rye and fescue summer,

                                  meticulously mowed.
