Sisters

By Terra Wolfe

With your great talons
of concern
and with your flapping
stirring my breathing air,
how can I fly?

Even loving you
knowing that you are sad,
even knowing how gentle you can be
with your soft feathers of caring
and how we can soar together
when currents are smooth.

Even knowing the shelter that you can bring
when we nestle together in the cold,
even wanting to carry your warmth
in my flight and return to it.

?Even wanting you to fly
to your own mountaintop.

I cannot have you pecking
at my small island
of peace.
