Aspects are the patterns the planets make in relationship to each other; you see them as lines in the chart connecting one planet to another. These aspects have a lot to do with describing the energies you are dealing with at any given time.

Major Aspects:

Conjunct: Right next to each other within 4 degrees. A blend of the energies of the two planets involved. Conjunctions are a bit difficult, but mostly intense. A big focus on the sign and house involved.

Sextile: 60 degrees, or within three degrees of it, favorable aspect. Uses the energies involved positively. Sextiles are a blend of elements that generally understand each other.

Square: 90 degrees +-4, hard aspect, difficult blending of energies, Intense. Squares are probably the most challenging blends of energy. They occur in Signs and houses that are not friendly and need to be balanced.

Trine: 120 degrees +-4, this is a very favorable aspect, while being pretty intense. Uses the energies involved more easily because the houses and signs at 120 degrees are much more harmonious than the harder aspects.

Opposition: 180 degrees, +-4 degrees, another hard aspect. It can be difficult like a square, it is challenging energies, intense. But it gives a polar opposite point of view that often emerges as a real strength.
